Presentation by special guest speaker:
Theoharis Theoharides, MS, PhD, MD, FAAAAI
Professor of Pharmacology and Internal Medicine
Director, Molecular Immunopharmacology and Drug Discovery Laboratory
Department of Integrative Physiology and Pathobiology
Tufts University School of Medicine
Dr. Theoharides ("Dr. Theo") is recognized around the world for his extensive research into mast cells and the role they play in a wide variety of diseases and conditions. He has published over 350 research papers and three textbooks, and has been placed in the top 5% of authors most quoted in pharmacological and immunological journals.
He has published extensively on mast cells, including an article on mastocytosis just published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and another pending publication on “brain fog,” a term often used to describe poor concentration and memory experienced by many mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) patients.
This presentation will provide a comprehensive and informative overview of mast cell disorders as they appear in a wide range of related inflammatory and neuroinflammatory conditions.
Mast cells are "master regulators" of the immune system. They come from bone marrow and go into all tissues of the body. Some diseases, such as mastocytosis, derive from an increased number of mast cells. Others, such as Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), are the result of the activation of mast cells. Other diseases involving mast cell activation include chronic fatigue syndrome, coronary hypersensitivity syndrome, eczema, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), psoriasis, and even autism.
TMS San Francisco Bay Area Support Group is for Mastocytosis and Related Mast Cell Disorders. Membership is NOT required. Those needing financial assistance in order to attend can contact the event organizer to apply for an Angel Fund Grant.
Physicians, medical professionals, including emergency room and emergency medical services personnel, are invited and encouraged to attend Saturday evening and Sunday events.
Connecting patients and their caregivers with others who understand is the focus of our group. Providing time to meet one another in a relaxed environment is a top priority for this special weekend. For those requiring overnight accommodations, there are a limited number of rooms available at the meeting location, Hilton Garden Inn San Mateo, July 24, 25, 26 (Friday-Sunday).
A special discounted room rate is available to attendees of this event. A courtesy shuttle is available to and from SFO Airport. Registration for this discounted guest room rate ends July 10, 2015. View details
Tickets for Dr. Theoharides’ presentation, AN OVERVIEW OF MAST CELL DISORDERS: RELATED INFLAMMATORY & NEUROINFLAMMATORY CONDITIONS, on Sunday, July 26th are $20 (Covers the cost of conference facilities. Any remaining proceeds support TMS). Space is limited. If event sells out, contact the event organizer to be put on the waitlist.
